Christmas in January, 2022. It’s over. 2023

Collage on Rivoli off-white paper backed by cutting board. Title in archival black ink reading Thanksgiving 2022 has been crossed out and replaced by Christmas, January 2023. Photograph taken by the artist on a Contax G2 of her ex-husband sleeping at Niamh’s parents’ home in Somerset, England, printed on acetate. Photo laid atop the photograph is a polaroid taken by the artist of her ex husband in his apartment in West Philadelphia when she surprised him on Valentines Day, 2008, The original polaroid has also been printed on acetate, much of it scratched away to reveal the tiny drawn/written text beneath. Other than her sleeping ex-husband’s body and the duvet half strewn across him the rest of the room has been scratched out roughly. Pastels in black, white and grey have been added to the scratched off areas creating texture. In the lower half of the collage: a section of a JCREW white cotton shirt. The section of shirt has been drawn on with fabric markers. Niamh added white pastel to create the corridor leading to a ghostly figure. The final shot of many French New Wave films ends with “FIN” meaning END. The style is particularly associated with the director Jean-Luc Godard. Niamh based this drawing on the ending of his film “Weekend” where he breaks the F away from the IN, perhaps suggesting that the ending is somehow broken. Lastly a clipping taken from an old copy of THE NEW YORK TIMES reads “I’m Sorry.”
