"I can be reborn as many times as I choose throughout my life” - Lady Gaga 2023
Collage on off-white Rivoli paper backed with foam board. The text Niamh thinks is from the book BIRTH but she’s added white out tape to create a kind of poem. Niamh had a trauma massage with a Danish man who is married to the sister of a friend. “It’s all about breathing through your stomach and rarely is that something we do properly. The second time I saw him he joked and said ‘oh is it nice to be breathing again since I saw you last.’ I shallow breathe nearly all the time, which I think is connected to a fear of being seen.” The two images in this work: a self portrait of Niamh almost faceless looking androgynous. The other photograph is a self-portrait of Remedios Varo a Spanish-Mexican Surrealist painter. Niamh found these photographs of Varo wearing these masks that split open to reveal three faces: “Those images capture exactly how I feel. One day I hope to see the mask in person. I don’t know how to make masks, I’ll definitely dedicate my first to Varo.”
